I was invited?by Martin Wright of the?Bath &?Bristol Marketing Network to present a talk at a recent meeting. I decided to talk about one of my passions, icon design.

The talk?was held at?The Bath and County Club and?centred around?what icons are and where they come from, what makes a good icon and what makes a bad icon? How do you go about developing iconography for your, or your client’s brand??I also?talked about an area of my?specialism, which is the use of icons in interfaces, apps and mobile platforms.

The introduction?revealed something I should really advertise more – that I studied Graphic Design with Business Studies as well as?Lettering, Calligraphy and Heraldic Design.

What, you mean?like designing Coats of Arms, hand-lettering and all that?

Yes. And I intend to get back into showing?more on my hand-lettering and Heraldry and how it all connects?to modern day brand identity.

So without further ado, here is the presentation ? with notes ? uploaded onto Slideshare. I hope you find it of interest?:

Interesting fact: As my partner and I were?brainstorming the content for ‘The Power of Icons’ a few?title suggestions that nearly made it were, ‘Are icons worth a thousand pictures?’ and ‘From the caveman to the modern day???how icons tell a story.’
